Minutes

As usual, check IRC Logs!

  1. Claw Sprint #9 (July 2016)
  • Please fill Doodle Pool to decide best Time for Kick off Call and add your names to Spreadsheet if you are going to participate in this Sprint. There is still time this week. Also check out current Milestone and comment there if you want any of these awesome Issues to be assigned to you.
  1. Fedora Import/Export sprint
  • Will be dedicated to architecture design discussion, mostly an implementation of a BagIt compatible way of importing/exporting bundled resources in Fedora 4.
  • There will be a initial Call (everyone is invited) on 2016-07-22 and we also have an Islandora CLAW related use case related to bulk/batch ingest.
  • Justin Simpsons asks if Islandora CLAW needs manual editing on the Drupal site in case (hypothetical) a BagIt file could be ingested directly to Fedora4. Nick explains how Alpaca (Sync) works and why we don't need to any extra resource manipulation, because CLAW is awesome and allows bi-directional Sync via camel!
  • Nick explains about BagIt Profiles, maintained by him and Mark Jordan.
  • Ben Armintor (Columbia) is developing an LDP compatible BagIt implementation
  • Mark Jordan will be in the Fedora 4 importer/exporter call also.
  1. Preservation Planning Ontology
  • Nick introduces the topic to new people and talks about what has been discussed in different places (OR2016, Claw Calls, Hylandora Day, API-X) with Justin about making Archivematica's Format Registry Policy an interoperable way of sharing standardized processing and preservation workflows of files shareable between repository communities.
  • Justin created a youtube video and explains how this idea is still on early discussion stages, but having/designing/reusing an Ontology based way of describing Preservation Planning could be a good way to advance in that direction.
  • Very in sync with API-X.
  • Randy Fischer expresses interest in this, explains how they have a microservices/xml based system at FLVC for identifying/deriving binaries as part of their current Islandora Workflow.
  • Justin develops further his idea: basically a way of describing and storing in RDF metadata from what/how was derived a given file. How can be that process replicated. This needs a way of mapping output of tools (Tech metadata) to rdf triples relevant to particular preservation needs, like what Hydra defined in their Technical Metadata Application Profile (Tool to Ontology mapping). Also needs a way of defining in same way Tools, versions of those and Services (End Points).
  • Other links related to this discussion
  • Current current format policy was not designed well for RDF
  • Premis event types need to be considered also, current version has 10-12 types, new 3.0 circa 4o types, more at http://premisimplementers.pbworks.com/w/page/102413902/Preservation%20Events%20Controlled%20Vocabulary
  • Nick goes for the food analogy (Cake Layers) and explains how he visualizes this for Claw: chullo -> crayfish & pdx -> file identification/characterization service -> format policy registry -> derivatives
  • Taverna's Ontology is mentioned for Workflow description. Martin also suggests BPMN in OWL might be worth a look
  • Justin will setup a Github repo for use cases, issues, and ideas can be brought together. Mainly collecting user stories for now.
  • Also: There is an Archivematica camp in late august and there will be a day devoted to islandora/hydra/etc Design and integration patterns import/export. More info and Camp Agenda
  • This discussion is not nearly over. Still a lot to discuss and talk about.
