I think that the checklist for "getting started" doesn't work great, since a person at that point won't have access to any of the resources, and will just have to click "next" to accounts. I propose that we funnel people into "accounts" right away and have a checklist at the end.

I'm definitely on board for this. I sketched out this work in https://github.com/neuropoly/onboarding/issues/2#issue-928660993, though it's a bit hard to pick it out there I guess.

@jcohenadad suggested using tickets, specifically an issue template (https://github.com/neuropoly/onboarding/tree/main/.github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE), and @joshuacwnewton made this handy kanban for it: https://github.com/neuropoly/onboarding/projects/1. I suggested we should make sure to keep the process on the wiki in any case. My current plan is to split the difference: write an issue template and copy it verbatim into the wiki.

So, I think it needs to be written with the target audience of both a new member, who doesn't know anything and is very confused, and an admin member who is walking them through the process. So it needs to have a generic step like "Get Invited to Organization X" and "Make sure Invitation to Organization X has been Accepted".

I think that accounts.md and checklist.md should become one file, and that most people should have most accounts up front just to keep things simple (the exceptions being: most people should not be admins up front; not everyone needs physical access to campus up front).

I am happy to leave this PR open and let it be where we collect all the updated onboarding information.

We're working on the main content of this over in https://github.com/neuropoly/onboarding/tree/main/.github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE. I want to have a checklist we can copy-paste between the two.

I was reading over what we've got, and I think for that to work, most of the current content of accounts.md, like the parts that explain how to actually use your email or what Slack channels are for what, all that needs to be split to separate informational pages. I think we need to collect the Computing Resources and MRI Scanning pages, along with a page for Slack, Github, and the Google Drive page under a "Facilities" heading. Then the checklist should just be one-liners, linking to those pages for more detail if necessary.
