HSL Navigator is an open-source project initiated by Helsinki Region Transport HSL to eventually surpass its current <Reittiopas.fi> journey planner service. The project aims to produce a new type of routing service with turn-by-turn navigation to cyclists and public transport passengers. The project also tests how to create a public service based on open-source development, various sources of open data as well as user-generated content.
@manchester Even further the project aims to developed an open-source core framework that can be flexibly deployed and customised in different cities as well as explore models where the different stakeholders are able to supply more data to the system (for example points of interest) as well as skin the system for their niche (such as city navigator aimed for disabled people or nightbus service application). The application will be initially deployed in Helsinki and Manchester.
The core concept is to make the navigation of a public transport system as effortless and predictable to the passenger as it is currently to use a turn-by-turn car navigator: even in a new place, you don't have to pre-plan much but just enter the target address and you can trust you will get seamlessly to the destination.
The earlier services don't provide such a unified solution that would cover all information needs on every step of a journey giving information and reliability in all situations, even in the event of traffic disruptions or planned changes. For more, see Concept.
