Containers 101 - From Scratch

An overview on how to create containers from scratch using only the operating system and kernel features. Remember to change all the values, folders, names, PIDs, parameters, etc., below according to your own environment. This is just an example based on my test environment.

Host's system info

Note: My base system was updated to Fedora 38 since then, but the same steps below apply from Fedora 36 to Fedora 38 at least.

Create a custom rootdir

Fedora 36:

Or export from an existing container image

Populate /dev/

Create a script to facilitate mounting proc, sysfs and tmpfs

# echo 'mount -t proc proc /proc/ && mount -t tmpfs tmpfs /tmp/ && mount -t sysfs sysfs /sys/' > /root/myrootdir/root/mounting.sh && chmod +x /root/myrootdir/root/mounting.sh

Enable DNS resolution

# rm -rf /root/myrootdir/etc/resolv.conf

# echo "nameserver 8.8.8.8" > /root/myrootdir/etc/resolv.conf

Change the httpd default listen port to 8081

# sed -i 's/Listen 80/Listen 8081/g' /root/myrootdir/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf

Download cpuburn for cgroups testing

# wget -P /root/myrootdir/root/ https://cdn.pmylund.com/files/tools/cpuburn/linux/cpuburn-1.0-amd64.tar.gz

# tar -zxvf /root/myrootdir/root/cpuburn-1.0-amd64.tar.gz -C /root/myrootdir/root/

Create the overlayfs directories

# mkdir /container

# mkdir /root/overlayfs

# mkdir /root/overlayfs/lower

# mkdir /root/overlayfs/upper

# mkdir /root/overlayfs/merged

# mkdir /root/overlayfs/work

# cp -R /root/myrootdir/* /root/overlayfs/lower

# cp -R /root/myrootdir/* /root/overlayfs/upper

Mount overlayfs and bind the upper directory

# mount -t overlay overlay -o lowerdir=/root/overlayfs/lower,upperdir=/root/overlayfs/upper,workdir=/root/overlayfs/work /root/overlayfs/merged

# mount -o bind /root/overlayfs/upper /container

In a separate window, run your container

# unshare -muinpfCTUr chroot /container /bin/bash

Setting network

# ip netns add test

# ip netns del test

# ip link add name br0 type bridge

# ip link set br0 up

# ip a add dev br0 10.0.0.1/24

# echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

# ln -s /proc/$(lsns | grep unshare | grep net | awk '{print $4}')/ns/net /var/run/netns/container

Note: You can also use the provided script setcontainer.sh to facilite the mounting of the overlayfs filesystem and creating/recreating the container with the steps aforementioned.

Inside the container, mount the needed filesystems and run httpd

# /root/mounting.sh

# hostname container.example.local

# httpd -k start

Inside the container, do some testing

# hostname

# mount

# ps -ef

# ipcs

# ip a

# ss -nputaw

# ping 10.0.0.1

# ping www.google.com.br

# curl rate.sx

Outside the container, do some testing
