Wouldn't be nice to have an svg badge generated alongside the *.html report to show the overall status? Something like badge
Then when linking to the coverage report from the static page, say markdown, no extra work is needed to extract the coverage status from the xml report.

For info I have been partially successful in creating a scoverage badge using a custom img.shields.io link.
The scoverage report is published to a public url (github pages in my case), together with the scoverage.xml file.

You can then use the shields.io link similar to:

https://img.shields.io/badge/dynamic/xml?color=informational&label=coverage&prefix=statement&query=%2Fscoverage%2F%40statement-rate&suffix=%25&url=https%3A%2F%2F.github.io%2Flife%2Fcoverage%2Fscoverage.xml

Hope that helps a little - even if its nearly 4 years late.
