Intermittently, the Color By Button is gone and I have no idea why or how to get it back, so I can't color the surfaces in the 3D viewer. Then later, it reappears.

The way to get into this state is to select a couple of points, then in the Actions menu click pin selected items. The viewers for both items appear and the surface models load in an uncolored state, but there is no color by button. I suspect that because neither of them is the focus item, the color by button is suppressed. As soon as I click on one of them, the button does appear. I'm not sure now whether to consider this is a bug or not. It is confusing for the user. We could arbitrarily force one of the views to be the focus.
I agree it's confusing. It's happened to me a few times and I didn't know what was wrong for a little while.
This also happens when:
Closing the currently selected pin using the x button in the frame
Hiding the currently selected pin by selecting its point or row and Actions > Hide
Filtering out the currently selected pin by using a variable filter
I could certainly just select any other open pin under these circumstances, but am wondering if that could lead to unintended consequences. Let's discuss more.
