Supported MIQ migration path

We plan to upgrade our MIQ environnement.
We currently run Morphy release and plan to upgrade to Petrosian.

Does MIQ support direct upgrade from Morphy to Petrosian or do we need to do intermediate upgrades ?

Hey @lamm I believe you can upgrade directly to any version as long as you follow the upgrade steps from each version, e.g. if you had to change the postgres module version the version prior that would still apply

The biggest hurdle going from morphy to petrosian is the ruby 2.6 to 3.0 and postgres 10 to 13 upgrade. For ruby, any custom ruby automations you have should be thoroughly tested as ruby 3.0 had many fixes internally so you may need to watch out for them. For postgresql, you should do a full pg backup from pg 10 and restore onto a new appliance with pg 13. Test this thoroughly before trying it in a production environment.

Note, you'll still need to do the normal upgrade procedure including rake db:migrate to apply any changes to the schema before you can start using petrosian.

More specifics:

Note 2, you can do an upgrade from existing appliances but since you're jumping versions, it's probably good to keep your existing appliance as a reference model, export the database using pg_dump -Fc -d vmdb_production > <file_path_with_enough_space>. Then deploy a new appliance, restore the db on the new appliance with pg_restore -v -d vmdb_production <your_backup_file>. copy over your v2_key from the original appliance to /var/www/miq/vmdb/certs or via the appliance_console. If you want to "inherit" the server settings from the old envioronment, you need to copy the /var/www/miq/vmdb/GUID from the original server to the new location. Then, rake db:migrate

pg_dump and pg_dumpall are similar but keep in mind dump is a single database and dump all does the whole cluster. Depending on what you want to do, you may or may not want to get system tables, such as if you're doing HA postgres/region replication. For the purposes of a single database backup with no HA or region replication, you can use either one.
