When backing up and restoring a course, the OU wiki template file does not pull through for all users. The template file may appear in the restore for the course admin or faculty, but there will be a blank wiki page for all other students. The template function is fantastic, but quite useless if we have to always manually reinsert the template after restoring.

Can you provide further details on what Moodle version and what ouwiki version you are using please?
Also, are you using an xml or zip template?

I'm assuming you are backing up without user data as templates only get included in the backup in this case; all users should see the template pages when accessing the ouwiki for the first time - there isn't any differentiation between students/teachers etc as far as I recall.

Thanks Jason. Sorry I missed those details in the original post.

  • Moodle 2.6 (please note that this same issue happened when we were on Moodle 2.5)
  • Ou WIKI version 2.6 (master development branch)
  • I tried using both xml and zip templates, the same issue occurred with both.

We do back up with user data.

Thank you!

OK thanks.

So, if you backup with user data are the users' wiki's there on the restored wiki (even if empty and no start page - you'll see their name in the dropdown list).

If so, the template won't get applied. Templates only get applied when a user visits their wiki for the first time - if there is any existing data from a backup then the template won't get applied.

Does that sound like it might be the situation you are experiencing?

YES. Let me try that. HUGE help, thank you Jason! Do you know if v.2.6 is actively maintained at the moment?

The master branch is currently unstable so not recommended as we have only just moved to 2.6 in development and so there may be potential bugs that have not been picked up yet.

Saying that, if you are on 2.6 then the 2.5 version will not be any better as at least the master branch has some (and a few more coming) 2.6 fixes. (In terms of wiki features etc it is the same [or will be when we 'officially' release a 2.5 update in the next few weeks], master just has 2.6 fix stuff in extra)

Hi, this is a timely discussion for us, as we are seeing a similar issue in Moodle 2.8.

There is an assessesed wiki with a template set for the sub wikis', and for some studenents there is only a blank page when you asccess their wiki from the drop down list. Some of those may be explained by students having not accessing the page yet.

However, we do have a report from one student that all they see when they access their page is:

"
This wiki's start page has not yet been created.

Would you like to create it?
"
and a 'Create page' button below.

Is there any way to sort this so as the content appears, or will the content appear if the student clicks on the 'Create page' button (my assumption is that will create a new page).

Thanks.

@mfindlayated Are you working on a restored course that had user data included? This is an issue with using templates as you then end up with a wiki that has pre-populated/blank wikis - but with template there should be no wikis and then they get created with the template on first access.

If users see the 'Create page' button that will create a blank wiki and not setup the template.

Looking at the course logs it looks like the couse was a restored course, but the users were added / enrolled manually later via csv.

Is there any way to fix the template for the affected students, or will th einstructor need to create a new wiki?
Thanks.

The only way to fix the template is to ensure the template is setup correctly, then delete from the DB any user wiki records where they have not been created from the template. (Might be difficult to find these, if you have a template with certain named pages that might be a way to find these)

If you restored without user data the templates are usually OK (that is how we use them) - I suppose it might be worthwhile testing the wiki has been created OK before students start using it if there are problems with this aspect of the functionality.

Thanks.

The issue is only affecting 4 students, so we have tried coying the content fromt he html view into a new wiki page on a test account.

This seemed to work except that I had to manually upload the images as they didn't carry through for some rreason.

Before I do this for the 4 affected students, is this approach likely to have any detrimental effect on the wiki, or how it is graded etc?

Thanks again.

@mfindlayated That doesn't sound like it would cause any issues.
