Slack group

I've added a slack group https://gosubgroup.slack.com for some realtime discussions which can come in handy. I'm not sure if this will be the main chat channel, or if we move to somewhere else, but for now it's a place to hang out.

How about making a Discord server?

Would it make sense to use Matrix or IRC? Both of them are more open than the alternatives.

I'm all for open alternatives, but not for 10 different channels.

My experience with discord is not that great.. I always get the feeling a party cannon exploded in the chat whenever I log into a discord server. IRC i think it too limited. I was looking into mattermost, but unfortunately it is still a paid plan even if you host it yourself.

Edit: I see that self-hosting has unlimited users for $0. So it might be "free".

The Discord party cannon is only really a thing in big servers of more than 10k members, I never had such feelings in small programming communities. I have honestly never used such other live chat services though (only phone messengers like WhatsApp).

As there are not many developers around (yet?), input of everybody is appreciated.

I have set up a mattermost server for testing at https:;//chat.developer.gosub.io, to check if this is a viable option. If not, we can always check other systems. I have heard good stories about mattermost, but i have no experience with matrix. It might be an alternative as well, but we have to chose something.

A matrix room/space will be aprreciated, with matrix it is possible to very easily bridge multiple topic channels to other platforms like slack, discord, irc, mattermost etc

I wouldn't mind to have another system up and running like matrix, but the main issues are that I'm currently not able to setup such a system (i don't know how much time it would take, as I'm not familiar with matrix as a whole),.. and I noticed that the slack channel are just a few developers (and mostly idle). It would not make sense to have more platforms than users :-)

However, if somebody is able to setup a matrix platform we can always try and connect them to the slack channel for now.

Let's at least define a default/official app, to not have 5 different channels where things get widely spread and unmanageable :)

You will have many people signing up and never show up again, that's just the nature of open source projects.
