The checks.py uses a dtype alias deprecated in the current version of Numpy.
https://numpy.org/devdocs/release/1.20.0-notes.html#deprecations

def _dtype_float(data):
    """ True if the values in the array are floating point"""
    return data.dtype == np.float

Should be float or np.float_.
