What is ckanext-requestdata?

The requestdata extension allows data maintainers to publish dataset metadata only, making users aware of a datasets existence without uploading the file(s).

An interested user can indicate to dataset maintainers their interest in accessing a dataset by selecting “Request data” on the dataset page.

Requests are managed by the dataset maintainer through new dashboards (separate dashboards for users, organizations and system administrators) displaying all requests. Requests are grouped into "new requests", "open requests" and "archived requests".

Why use ckanext-requestdata?

  • Make others aware that your data is available
  • Publish dataset metadata without uploading a file(s)
  • Once a user requests access, you can decide exactly what to share
  • Data may contain personal identifiable information
  • You may need to restrict access to sensitive data

How to request resources from a metadata only dataset

For a metadata-only dataset, instead of resources being made immediately available, an user can indicate their interest to the dataset maintainer by selecting “Request data”.

The dataset maintainer is notified once the interested user has entered their name, email and comments explaining why they would like to access the dataset(s).

The maintainer will be notified of the request by an alert through the UI and also by email.

Where can maintainers find requests for metadata only datasets

There are seperate user, organization and admin dashboards from where maintainers can accept or decline requests.
