僵尸是流行文化中一个经久不衰的符号,在数十年的历史中出现了无数的衍生和变体。只要你曾经面对过一块发亮的屏幕,你一定见过它们。《植物大战僵尸》中它们只能承受10颗豌豆的打击,《僵尸世界大战》中则动作迅猛势不可挡。《活死人黎明》中它们所过之处到处是肠子和血浆,而《我是僵尸》里女主角却成了一个温文尔雅,吃点脑花还得藏着掖着的低调僵尸。
对比其他在大众文化中流传已久、反复出现的形象和符号,比如忍者、吸血鬼和机器人,僵尸的外在形象要糟糕得多,但这并不影响人们对它的认同和迷恋。2010年之后,僵尸攻克了整个影像文化的阵地,曾经同时有三四部影视作品以它为题材,还都取得了不错的收视和票房。在英语国家,甚至出现了大量群众扮成僵尸走上街头,不静坐不示威就为图一乐的现象,这更是未曾见于其他流行文化符号的。
这种成功令人惊羡,而人们的迷恋更让人讶异不解。僵尸们迟缓、呆板、残忍、肮脏,几乎与人们希望成为的形象截然相反。为什么僵尸这个符号能够引起英语国家这么多人的共鸣?更加难回答的问题是,为什么在明清时就开始谈论僵尸的中国,以及整个东方,僵尸并不具有这种文化感染力?
1625年,海地成为法国的殖民地,法国人将他们控制的大部分海地土地开辟为甘蔗种植园,并从西非进口黑奴,作为主要的劳动力。当这些黑人远渡重洋,踏上海地的土地,也将西非的巫毒信仰带到了这个加勒比海岛国。他们相信,有一些被称为 bokor 的术士,能够用巫术复活死者,让这些复活的僵尸成为只听命于自己的奴隶。
在讲述这些事情时,海地的黑人奴隶们有没有联想到自己的身份?他们保持了缄默。但这个传说在海地的变体却是十分值得玩味:bokor 们不能给僵尸奴隶吃人类的食物。如果僵尸吃进了哪怕一点点盐,僵尸们的意识就会觉醒,不再愿意做术士们的奴隶。换句话说,这时的僵尸重又变成了完整的人。海地本土写作者在1957-1986年的杜瓦利埃父子独裁统治期间,一遍又一遍地在他们的故事中重复这个僵尸复生的母题。
从1915年到1934年,海地被美国占领。海地的巫毒信仰和传统文化因而也开始进入美国人的视野,第一次有了影响英语国家文学的机会。包括尤金·奥尼尔和奥森·威尔斯在内的众多美国作家都受到了海地传统文化的影响。但对于当时的美国普通读者来说,对他们影响最大的恐怕还是拥有怪人名声的旅行家兼作家威廉·B·西布鲁克。西布鲁克虽然在纽约格林尼治村的严肃作家圈里受尽打击,但他的黎巴嫩之行和与贝都因人共同生活的经历被他写成了《阿拉伯历险》之后,他作为旅行作家的声望日隆,也使他能够到刚刚引起美国人兴趣的海地旅行。1929年,西布鲁克在他以海地为背景的小说《魔岛》中,借一位税务员波利尼斯之口,讲述了一对术士夫妇带着自己的僵尸奴隶给美国蔗糖公司工作的故事。在小说中,西布鲁克笔下的第一人称叙述者对这个故事将信将疑,但不久后“我”就在海地的一个小岛上见到了真正的僵尸。
西布鲁克的叙述一直在对现代科学的坚信和对神秘主义的迷恋中摇摆。他一面坚持用科学方法研究超自然现象,一面又反复强调科学不能解释所有问题。这种态度更给他的小说增添了神秘和刺激色彩。《魔岛》出版之后,立即成为畅销书,并启发了之后很大一部分恐怖电影和小说中的僵尸形象。
明清民间传说和志怪小说中的僵尸,则并不是供人役使的奴隶,而是由“尸变”过程所产生。引起“尸变”的,或是由于动物接触,或是由于埋葬不当,抑或由于供养、祭扫没有到位。说到底,都是民间禁忌转化成的带有惩戒性质的故事。袁枚的《子不语》和《续子不语》中,则多有因为人的贪欲或恶意,而有意无意导致尸变的故事,这大概是因为袁枚本来就只打算利用鬼神的幌子,写人间因果报应的道理。
《魔岛》带来的僵尸和巫毒教热潮很快引起了百老汇和好莱坞的注意。虽然在舞台上呈现僵尸很快被证明只会让观众感到厌烦,剧情受到《魔岛》直接影响的独立恐怖电影《苍白僵尸》却不仅大受欢迎,还成为了整整一个类型的开山之作。
在电影中,一对年轻夫妇到海地旅行结婚,却因为一个朋友的妒忌而陷入危险的境地。活泼美丽的妻子被邪恶的海地术士变为僵尸,小肚鸡肠又猥琐的朋友也加入了术士的僵尸大军,在糖厂里没日没夜地工作。英勇的男主角一度命悬一线,但在善良睿智的牧师帮助下终于打败术士,夺回了自己的妻子。
这是僵尸的形象第一次出现在大银幕上并产生强烈的反响。影片的票房之高让饰演大反派的比拉·卢格西终生后悔自己只拿了800美元的片酬,而没有要求票房提成。但他也许应该从这样一个事实中得到安慰:他是为数不多的能在僵尸类型影片中担任大反派的演员。在他的时代之后的僵尸电影,多靠僵尸本身带来恐惧和不安,而《苍白僵尸》中的僵尸对观众来说并不可怕,只是可怜。既然《魔岛》在引进僵尸这个符号的时候已经让僵尸不那么可怕,影片只有更上层楼,引入观众真正的恐惧:一个像观众一样的白人,甚至比观众好看得多的美人,到了巫毒教盛行的化外之地,也会变成令人厌恶的僵尸!
片名中的“白色”的意味也就在此。僵尸不稀奇,白人变成的僵尸才稀奇。在影片上映的1932年,美国仍然在海地驻军,但西方各国对他们的殖民地早已丧失了大部分控制。在这后殖民主义思潮萌芽的时代,过去的殖民者们担忧的是自己引以为豪的欧洲先进文化反而被殖民地的“野蛮”和“落后”影响(其实这已经发生了不是么),殖民者被当地人同化,从而导致建立在希腊罗马基础上的西方传统文明无处安放。这种文化和族群认同的危机感投射到大众文化中,造就了第一部有影响的僵尸电影《苍白僵尸》。
《苍白僵尸》为之后30多年的僵尸电影定下了基调:无知的男女主角因为某种原因,来到加勒比海上的某个岛屿,因而目击了活生生的人被变成僵尸的恐怖事件。为了避免同样的命运,他们必须与邪恶的术士或者疯狂的科学家斗智斗勇。僵尸电影的一大恐怖要素,即从正常的“我们”的一员,可以轻易地变为恐怖的“他者”和异类,在这一阶段正式定型。
虽然巫毒法术仍然维持着它神秘的吸引力,但好莱坞需要新的恐怖。战争带来了现成的可供仇恨和恐惧的异族,也带来了对科学和技术的想象空间。在《僵尸的复仇》(1943)中,一位疯狂科学家妄图在美国南部为纳粹建立一支“即使一半身体被炸成碎片”,也会继续执行命令,无人能挡的僵尸大军,为此甚至不惜将死去的妻子也变成僵尸。但和之前不少僵尸电影一样,这个特殊的僵尸产生了自我意识,从而使疯狂科学家的阴谋破产。僵尸的无意识,在过去的僵尸电影中作为受害者一种令人怜悯的特性,在战争的背景下开始被赋予一种新的含义,即这种无意识使它们成为不会恐惧、不会后退,无法阻挡的杀人机器。僵尸本身开始成为恐惧的对象,将它们与独裁国家的军队类比无疑有助于增加对敌人的警惕和维持战争状态所需的敌意。但即使在未被战火波及的美国本土,维持士气的需要也不允许大众文化对这种可能性做进一步的探讨。
从40年代到60年代,僵尸是电影中可有可无的符号,但它们仍然是大众恐惧的寄托。冷战的进行和两种意识形态的相互批判,以及对二战中“平庸的恶”的反思,开始让僵尸的形象产生变化。它们从30年代单纯的受害者的形象,变成穷凶极恶之徒的危险工具。它们的无意识仍然代表了一种悲惨的命运,但观众对这种命运的反映从单纯的怜悯变成了忧虑和厌恶。目睹了二战前极权国家的崛起,英语国家民众很容易将僵尸的无意识和被奴役与他们所感知和想象的极权统治下的生活状态联想到一起。科学和技术在这一时期进入了大众视野,也取代巫毒蛊术成为大众想象中,被试图奴役他人的恶棍所利用的神秘力量。
整个东方在这一时期,则要么正在从被侵略和殖民的状态中解脱出来(如中国),或者自身曾是极权统治下排外情绪的作用客体(如日本)。对它们来说,被侵略的恐惧有着具体得多的载体,用不着求助于编造出来的虚拟敌人。
当变成僵尸意味着成为奴隶,制造恐惧的最有效手段自然是描绘奴隶主即巫毒术士的邪恶。而当僵尸本身成为恐怖力量的化身和载体,大量的银幕时间就必须交给这些面容扭曲,动作僵硬的怪物奇观,而它们的制造者退居幕后。到了这个阶段,新一代的僵尸故事便呼之欲出了。
1968年,年轻的导演和剧作家乔治·罗梅洛拍摄的《活死人之夜》上映了。一夜之间,这部电影颠覆了人们对恐怖电影的定义和预期。罗梅洛摈弃了战前恐怖电影利用光影和布景营造恐怖气氛的办法,而纯粹用成群结队的嗜血僵尸带来的压迫感和封闭空间中危机四伏的惊张感调动观众心中最原始的,属于即将被吃掉的猎物的恐惧。
这在今天看来或许不算什么,但对于习惯了慢节奏的故弄玄虚和脸谱化恶棍的恐怖片观众来说,这全新风格的冲击不啻为根本的颠覆。《活死人之夜》对于僵尸电影乃至恐怖片的影响,几乎可以与《星球大战》对科幻电影的影响相提并论。此后近50年,欧美恐怖片都在它设定的视觉化恐怖的道路上前进。
尽管如此颠覆,《活死人之夜》并不是罗梅洛凭空开创的恐怖片模式。它描写的无意识、无穷无尽的嗜血僵尸是冷战时期那些僵尸们的自然延续。罗梅洛想写一个关于革命中的他者的故事,受到理查德·玛瑟森的小说《我是传奇》的启发,他并不想仅仅从人类的视角出发来刻画令人恐惧的他者,而是将他者取代人类的过程看作一场革命来描绘。他认为,描写一场革命必须从开头写起,于是《活死人之夜》就是几个人类目睹这一过程开端的故事。
罗梅洛为了避免这部影片被当作对《我是传奇》的直接剽窃,将吸血鬼改成了吃人血肉的“食尸鬼”,但保留了“通过咬伤受害者使其转变”这个设定。大众文化中的僵尸从被巫术控制的受害者到带来全人类生存危机的异类这个设定终于宣告完成,“僵尸世界末日”也作为一个虚构作品的主题和文化现象正式登上历史舞台。
《活死人之夜》上映时,美国电影协会的分级制度尚未正式生效,影院也把这部影片和其他相对“温和”的恐怖电影一样对待,放在周六下午的时间放映,结果许多十来岁的少年甚至年龄更小的小观众看到了这部影片,许多影评人因此批评影片的暴力毫无节制。但也有更多的影评人从影片中看到了深层次的信息。《村声》的爱里奥特·施泰因认为影片表现了发生在美国中部的战争,暗指越战使得美国的阶层发生了分裂,而僵尸肆虐的场景正是对美国军人在越南战场上处境的写照。担任男主角的演员杜安·琼斯是黑人,虽然罗梅洛反复强调他仅仅是因为在试镜中表现最好而被选为主角,但他饰演的英雄形象的命运被认为影射了此前马丁·路德·金和马尔科姆·X的不幸遇害。
面对这么多的索隐和附会,罗梅洛的态度也很坦白,承认影片反映了那个时代的社会矛盾:“那可是60年代,每个人都有‘信息’要传达。正因为那是60年代才会有这么多愤怒、表态等等东西。我们总在思考各种暗示,自然也有一些东西渗透到了电影中。”
凭借极度的视觉冲击和60年代的动荡带来的丰富解读,《活死人之夜》改变了僵尸在流行文化中的边缘、可替代的地位,转而成为一种含义丰富又令人过目不忘的象征物。罗梅洛和他的搭档分别在《活死人之夜》的基础上衍生了一系列续集,各种跟风之作则将罗梅洛的僵尸形象延续到了21世纪。但80年代中期到90年代是僵尸电影的低谷,没有产生几部给人留下印象的影片。
这股热潮之中,东方影坛也后知后觉地在20世纪90年代推出了一些利用僵尸概念的跟风之作。例如香港的《生化寿尸》,日本的《Versus》和《Stacy》。这些影片也算是各有特色,然而并未在观众中引起太大波澜,也没有对影坛产生持续的影响。
转眼间21世纪的头15年将要过去,人们一边享受着现代科技带来的所有便利,习惯于数字化的、几乎与自然界的有形限制脱钩的生活,一边更加着迷于僵尸故事对血肉、疼痛和一切有关身体的细节的刻画。通过观察虚构的社会生活的毁灭,我们才能在视线从一块屏幕到另一块屏幕的间隙,确定我们身处的现实世界仍然一切正常;或者,当现代的人本主义将要被后现代的 cyborg、虚无主义和拟像质疑得哑口无言,僵尸能帮助未曾考虑过意识与身体的关系的普通人完成这一过渡。
僵尸能够在现代性与后现代之间架起一道便于普通人走过的桥梁,是因为它与一般人是如此相似,唯一的不同在于无意识状态造成其欲望的单纯。它迫使我们质疑对唯一的价值观和目标不加思索地接受的危害,成群的僵尸这个意象则对建制、集体和大一统的主流文化提出了直接的反讽和否定。现代性鼓励人们欣赏人性和人体,僵尸却将人体解构为正在腐败的肉血骨,强调这个过程的不断发生和不可避免,那么人性自然不是这正在腐败的躯体自发的产物,它在僵尸电影里体现为一个又一个的选择,而且后现代地缺乏统一性和价值判断。瞥见个体死亡之后的事件和人类文明的崩溃是僵尸电影提供的一种独特体验,没有其他的末日看起来如此接近真实,但又保持了足够的荒诞。思索人类的定义和命运因此而变得低成本和普及。
僵尸电影和文学作品的流行,正显示人类社会的命运又来到了一个动荡、诡异而关键的当口。1929年,大萧条开始时,《魔岛》走进了人们的视野;1968年,在两种意识形态争斗最为激烈,西方政府与民众关系也最为紧张的时期,《活死人之夜》定义了一个时代的恐惧对象;僵持的80年代和繁荣的90年代,少有关于僵尸的值得注意的作品。2010年起《行尸走肉》掀起的僵尸片热潮,与2009年起的经济衰退和转型有很大的关系。人们面对不确定的现实和众多可能好可能坏的选择,需要直视自己的恐惧,而僵尸电影提供的虚拟最坏情景帮助人们找到自己的价值观坐标。
这一次僵尸电影的复苏,还有不同于过去的地方,就是向荧屏之外的扩展。Zombie Walk 和漫展上的僵尸 cosplay 意味着人们在怜悯僵尸、畏惧僵尸之后,开始认同僵尸。这代表了怎样的社会情绪?对于一部分人,扮成僵尸和其他人一起游行也许体现了一种基于共同爱好的集体归属,这在个人主义盛行,家庭碎片化的今天对于个体来说也许变得更为重要。对于另一部分人,扮成僵尸满足了他们冒犯主流审美和彰显与众不同的心理需要。但对于所有人,扮演僵尸都是一种自嘲,正如罗梅洛和彼得·杰克逊在他们的僵尸电影里,所希望表达的那种作为人类的自嘲。21世纪的观众已经能意识到僵尸表示另一种人类状况,代表了我们每个人都能体会到的疲惫不堪而又身不由己的时刻,而这种时刻正在现代技术下变得越来越多。那么即使承认自己是个僵尸,又有什么不对的呢?
这一次僵尸热潮中,同样明显的是东方文化和参与者的缺席。西方的僵尸长期以来都是代表着人们不愿意陷入的状态,而东方僵尸却成为知识分子被压抑的欲望的代言者。也许正是因为这点不同,僵尸在东方始终未能被赋予在西方那样丰富的含义。《子不语》里的僵尸看起来太具体,太生活化,以至于不能区别于那些同样代表知识分子欲念的鬼怪。除了敦促人们遵守丧葬礼仪的教化作用,僵尸的故事在东方始终是属于社会建制而非讲述者和传播者的。
僵尸的热潮还将持续几年,这很难说清。过去僵尸被用来讨论种族和阶层问题,而当前各种话语的交锋给僵尸形象带来了更多层次的意涵,越来越多的矛盾看不到简单的解决途径,僵尸可能会以各种我们意想不到的面貌出现在新的作品里。也许历史会把我们带到一个充满了平等和机遇的黄金时代,那么僵尸们会暂时蛰伏,或者成为可笑的传说,但这样的年代很可能不会长久。那之后,僵尸大概又会从它们的坟地里爬出,继续扮演那个时代人们的梦魇和一种生存状态的比喻。
