Emoji symbol

Emoji code

⚖️

Emoji description

Game-balancing tweaks, e.g. buffs, nerfs.

Describe the use case of your emoji

I was unsatisfied with the lack of an emoji that accurately described tweaks dedicated to game balance. The closest symbol seemed to be 🚸, but that only targeted "improving user experience / usability" and not explicitly balancing a game via making certain features/mechanics stronger ("buffing") or weaker ("nerfing"). The scale, ⚖, was an obvious choice given its "balancing" function.

Is this use case covered by an existing emoji?

No ❌

Does this emoji fall into the "how" or the "what" category?

  • This proposal do not describe "how" a commit was made, but does in fact describe "what" is the contents of the commit about.

Examples

⚖ Increased [gun] fire rate from 200 RPM to 300 RPM
⚖ Lowered attack strength of [weapon] from 10 HP to 7 HP
⚖ Increased attack cooldown of [attack] from 1.5 seconds to 2 seconds

I like the idea of "balance," but here are some other thoughts too.

  1. Does 🔧 (configuration) work today?
  2. Would we want an emoji specific to game, where 🎲 (:game_die:) and 🎮 (:video-game:) came to mind.

Potentially related to #850 or #282

potentially already covered by:

  • 👔 add or update business logic
  • 🔧 add or update configuration files

Yeah, I think that business logic is very much the same use case, specially when you consider the discussion around adding the business logic emoji and also that the "business" of a game is the player's fun, and we use the act of balancing with the goal of achieving said fun.

So I donno, I don't feel we should add thi emoji as we tend to avoid topic specific emojis unless no other option exists, what are your further thoughts about it? I feel we should stick to just the one emoji we already have.

That said, maybe we could tweak the description of it to more easily be identified as the right emoji for this case also, any suggestions?

EDIT: in the past we've use a lot of "[...] or blabla...", but I don't think that adding "add or update business logic or game balancing" is the right way to go. just wished to disclaim this 😅

another solution would be to add tags to the emojis so it's easier to search. in my experience, i find myself reading the whole list of emojis far too many times because the search is inefficient. there is a silver lining to this process, that i got familiarized with the whole set of gitmojis, but it's not easy for newcomers. for example, if someone searches for "image" or "audio", they won't find any result, when they should find 🍱 (assets). if they search for "sound", it's even worse, they will find 🔊 (logs) because its code is loud_sound. the tags could also direct developers to more accurate emojis, for example, if someone searches for "readability" the result could be 🎨 (improve structure/format), avoiding the generic ♻️ (refactor).

there already is an issue for improving the searchability of emojis by using this method of "related emojis", #924 I think it would be great to have your contribution there also

I propose using 🎛️ for modified default/initial values, instead of using ⚖ exclusively for games: #1800. I agree with @connorjs that 🎮 may be suitable for game-related changes. 🔧 does not fit because it refers specifically to files instead of in-code values.
