Data from a couple years ago on popularity of different rustc versions: rust-lang/libs-team#72 (comment)

Lowest reasonable target for us is 1.56.0 when the rust-version flag in Cargo.toml was introduced: https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/blob/master/RELEASES.md#cargo-23

To check and enforce MSRV, cargo-msrv is a good tool.
